Anyone following the titanic sub story? Thoughts?

It's horrible

5 rich men in a submarine on route to see the titanic wreckage get lost in the ocean. Search teams must rush to find them before their 12 hours of oxygen runs out.. almost sounds like a Hollywood movie but then you realise this is happening in real time.

Expert say their survival rate is at 1%. In other words this is retrieval mission rather than a rescue mission.

Update: The five men have been confirmed dead by the coastguard. Debris found at the scene is consistent of a catastrophic implosion of the vessel, meaning they were killed instantly.
Rip to the victims and condolences to their friends and family.

yes, what an awful scenario. It's concerning there is no "back out" plan, that they decided to go forward when the weather window was small. Sounds like "into thin air"... about the climb up Everest that didn't go well. They are bolted into the sub so even if they surface, they suffocate if not found.

I suspect there will be an inquisition following this no matter how it ends.

James Cameron went nearly twice as deep 10 years ago. Unreal.

scariest part is even if they did have an escape hatch (from the inside) the pressure would crush their bodies like a hydraulic press. the possibilities are endless. If they were going as deep as they did, they should have considered everything. they would have found that the risks outweigh the pros.
I think even James Cameron got stuck down there for 16 hours at one point.

Death is never happy but at least their death was instant and not agonizing and prolonged. I heard from friends when a death happens too quickly the body feels nothing because it does not have time to react.

Don’t be an asshole. Did these guys get involved with something they shouldn’t of done? Arguably yes. But that doesn’t mean they were “evil” just because they had money and wanted to go on an adventure. They don’t deserve to die a slow agonizing death from carbon dioxide poisoning with no way to contact their families. Rich or poor pain is pain and death is death.

it's interesting that people jump to the conclusion, just because their "rich their bad people"... if they did any research on the billionaire and millionaires that were onboard, they were philanthropists that donated hundreds/millions to charities, including being involved on a personal level with people that are less fortunate. people are people no matter what you are. Unfortunately, they didn't make it, I was hoping for the best too but with what they were facing it was a 1% percent chance survival.

@LaFerrari yep. Not saying they made the wisest decision to 100% trust that mini sub but adventures are about risk taking. Ask any mountain climber. And again pain is pain and death is death. It wasn’t like these guys were hanging out with Jeffrey Epstein on pedo island or something.

I am very sad about the loss of these people and the pain this causes their families... but they died because of hubris as much as anything else. The power of nature is formidable. I support and applaud the people who risk their lives to challenge nature in the cause of improving man's state, but a pleasure trip to the ocean's depths is a different matter. To gape at the wreck of the Titanic, which took so many lives, is to die for a cheap thrill. I doubt very much that these new victims' survivors would appreciate another group of thrill seekers submerging to look at this new wreckage adding to the voyeurism.

I followed the news most of the week, at first it didn't even catch my attention on the news until it became a bigger news story as the weekend became the week. I really took an interest in the news from about last Monday or the Tuesday, and such a sad outcome and I was really moved by all rescuers efforts and media efforts to hope for a positive outcome which I held also to that hope, mmm those poor souls and sympathies to all and thank you's to all who searched or who cared ,❤️💗👍

I think they did not have a distress signal. I doubt they had a procedure to get them up out of danger. But I think the hull imploded almost instantly. Like the Thresher submarine. They may have known it was coming briefly before THRUP!

It's very sad all around. What is confusing and also awful is that we detected an underwater implosion right near the area, and the government didn't inform us until 4 days later. So we already knew they were dead when everyone was freaking out about it, thinking they might still be alive.

From what I have read, the sub did not have any certifications at all and a scaled model of the pressure hull only showed good to 9800 feet below sea level. There was little done in regards to safety because the according to the owner, safety requirements got into the way of technical progress. Plus some of the materials selected for the hull does not do well under the pressures you get at those depths. Simply put, that sub was an accident looking for a place to happen.

This sub was a total disaster. There wasn't a hatch of any kind, you had to be ratcheted in after the bow assembly was in place, the main viewing port was only certified to 1,300 for a 4,000 meter dive! There was no external flotation... I would not take that fucking thing to the deep end of a pool much less to the Titanic. Nothing about this sub was certified or USCG inspected. The previous safety officer quit over the glaring safety omissions.

Ok well according to the news it imploded (exploded) because parts of the submarine were floating above the ocean and it’s possible that it imploded the moment they lost contact with the submarine so apparently they’ve been dead this whole time and people were making jokes without knowing. It makes me so sad but it was painless I hope.

Canadian Coast Guard (ships) and Royal Canadian Air Force (planes) have been helping in the search. It's a joint effort between Canada, the US Navy and US Coast Guard. It's too bad that it's no longer search and rescue, now it's search and recover.
