"Spiritual is a difficult word since it means different things to different people. If I'm understanding you correctly, I believe that one needs to confront things in life that have no answers other than a spiritual one. I do not think that humans have need of religion which is often confused w/ spirituality. My belief is that spiritual is the flip side of psychological. I think most suffering comes from people's ego, their consciousness of "self"and much of that suffering is a result of what you believe you need to feel whole, often confused with your egos idea of what you must have ore must avoid in order to achieve happiness. I do not think that Western monotheism does a very good job of addressing that. I have personally found that Buddhism & Taoism (Daoism) has more relevance than Christianity, Judaism or Islam.
I believe that humans have a spirit. It is called a soul. But I do not think that we have spiritual needs. Even if we do seek answers in religion.

As in the "God-shaped hole?" I'm a believer and do myself have that need, but I am not sure that everyone perceives such a need.
