I did it a lot when I was a kid. I hitchhiked into the city every day for a year when I got my first job. I often went to different states. There was a difficult time in my life and I hitchhiked to the Canadian border and camped out for a few days to sort it all out. The last time I did it was over 20 years ago. I took my truck to a radiator shop a couple of towns over. I did not tell my wife I was going. I figured I would just hitch a ride home. So I walked and walked and nobody picked me up. A couple of hours later I got back home and my wife was really worried about me because she did not know where I was.
I knew at that time that the world had changed in the last few years and it was not for the better.
Where I live it's mostly tweakers who hitch hike. Backpackers, don't really hitch hike anymore, at least not in the states. Me and my dad picked one up in Maui before, not a tweaker, but a White girl who was living there. This was in 2011. In Hawaii tourists still hitch hike, and when I was in Poland I was riding with my uncle and he picked up some young guys who were heading to the film festival in our village. So in Europe, tourists also still hitch hike a little bit. And maybe New Zealand and some parts of Asia.
Last one I rode past I was kicked at. Even though the bike I was on at the time was a single seater. Where did they expect to sit? The handlebars without a helmet? Not losing my license for anyone. - I wouldn't these days anyway. Not unless I knew them.
I don't see many these days. Almost picked one up years ago, but here's the reasons why:
1. There was no cell reception
2. There was a car on the side of the road a mile back
3. The closest town was twenty miles away
4. I had a man with me
5. It was one guy hoofing it
With all of those factors, it was obvious why he needed a ride. The reason we didn't was by the time we went back to help, he had gotten a lift with someone else.
doesn't seem as common as it used to be. Last hitchiker i picked up was years ago. Young fella in shorts and a t-shirt holding his wallet. It was clear he was just trying to get across town, so I gave him a ride a few miles.
never picked up someone who looked to be heading cross country. If I had a pick-up, I'd be OK with them riding in the back if it was not too hot, too cold, or raining.
Hitchhiking remains popular among budget travelers but I guess its more common these days in safer countries where people presume or done research that people in that region is less likely to commit a fraud. I’ve never hitchhiked and would probably never pick someone up either.
Yes, yes, no. I picked a guy up that was walking a rural road near where I used to live. I carry a firearm and am a bigger guy so I don't worry too much.
No, I would not hitchhike unless it's a family. Dangerous for both the one picking up, and the one getting picked up. Why they have Uber, Lyft, etc etc

I am glad you are safe, but it is risky
I guess I had to grow up someday

I've never tried it myself, but I might some time
Don’t do it lol
Use Uber or Lyft instead

Good point👍🏻

It is risky to do so in my opinion
@CharlieCutePredator I agree that 99% of the time, it's a dumb idea. :)

I agree with you, it is less common now
Chick in the picture would get more than one kind of ride out of me.
Lmao
Truthfully I don’t see hitchhikers anymore so maybe it was replaced by an app or something like that.
I think it’s related to safety also
And more people using apps as you said like Uber or Lyft
Safety first & maybe people are too lazy to stick out their thumbs anyway.
Lol,,
I haven't and I wouldn't pick up a hitchhiker. Sorry, just too many crazies out there. You never know.
Totally agree, I wouldn’t do it if I am driving alone
Around here it is very common, but people are very friendly. I would never do it in America.
Lol
Where do you live

Safety is very important nowadays
The picture lol no woman would get into a car with a man they don't know... unless she's planning on killing him.
I don't see any hitchhikers, but I wouldn't stop for one.
Lmao
Sorry, I don’t know if I did something wrong, but your answer was anonymous, now it is not
I didn't mean to make it anonymous lol
Ok lol
I never picked up a hitchhiker and I would strongly advise anyone to only use it as an absolute last ditch resort.
Couldn’t agree more.
It’s especially dangerous for women. For obvious reasons.
Yes, but it is also not safe for anyone if they picked up the wrong person, or ride with the wrong person
Yeah it can be dangerous for either or honestly. You could be picking up a serial killer
👍🏻
I've hitch hiked. I wouldn't pick up a stranger up myself, but I have been picked up.
It is risky to pick up a stranger, agree👍🏻
In some rural areas where people are warmer with each other, yeah
Where is that😅
I don't wanna say. The less people that know about it the better😎
Smart👍🏻
I hitch-hiked all the time during the mid-late 70s through mid 80s.
Back then I would pick up a hitch hiker, but not these days.
Totally agree with you
I have... but the risks involved are too high. The exception being if I see a broke down car in the middle of nowhere.
Even the broken car is not enough indicator sometimes, it is risky
I agree with you
Yeah, well I’ve been picked up before hitchhiking. Rural road about 7 miles into town. I am a 210 6’3” man.
That’s very nice of them
As much as I love to help people, I don’t think I could take that risk.
@MinnieMousse
totally agree
@MinnieMousse me neither
