Girls, during childbirth does crowning make contractions seem less intense?

I've always noticed that if I have pain in one area of my body and injure another area the first area seems less painful for a time. Eventually the first area will seem just as painful, but for anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes the pain will either go away completely or it will seem much duller.

Does that happen during birth when you start to feel the "ring of fire?" Does the new pain make the contractions seem less painful or are they just as painful with the added pain of crowning?
