Christmas Day we will have turkey. Christmas Eve we have fish.
Feast of the Seven Fishes is an Italian-American tradition that takes place on Christmas Eve. In Italy, it's a fasting day called La Vigilia, a day for abstinence from meat... until Christmas Day, and then there is a big mid-day meal of pasta with meats.
In America, Italians brought this tradition to Little Italy in New York, sometime in the late 1800's. Why seven fishes? It may be from the Catholic Seven Sacraments or named from the Seven Hills of Rome. No one is quite sure.
There are some very traditional fishes that are served here in the U. S... eels, baccala (salt cod), calamari (squid), shrimp, mussels & clams and more.
My family had ham quite often for Christmas when I was growing up. That's what I remember.
My wife and I always have turkey for Thanksgiving, but have had a 15 or so year tradition of going out to a particular restaurant on the evening of Christmas Eve. We decide what to have when we get there. It could be BBQ ribs, steak or seafood, always accompanied by a good bottle of red wine that we often bring ourselves. Their corking fee is only $5.
We relax at home together on Christmas day and have delicious picnic-like, gourmet, finger food.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are for the two of us. We don't have any kids and our families are far away. It's nice.

Because we have a much bigger house than the rest of the family, we always have them join us for Christmas Dinner and evening supper, along with the opening of presents!
We always have a turkey, and this year a choice of venison and a nice smoked ham.
