Michael Jackson passed away 14 years ago on June 25, 2009. How do you reflect or think about the day he died and where were you?

Has or will there ever been any one of his caliber to become the next big pop star ever since? or Was he just one in a millennium artists?

I think with the way the music industry functions now, it’s not likely… radio and TV are much less effective nowadays, when factoring in the rise of accessible internet and smartphones… everyone jumps onto a website or app and streams whatever they want, whenever they want now. Now it’s more like “how broad is someone’s appeal?”

It’s not so much a radio playlist curated by big label executives anymore, pushing whatever or whoever they want to on the masses. It’s still happening to a degree, but how often are you listening to FM radio anymore? I’m certainly not listening to it… You and I and everyone else streaming music are essentially choosing our OWN superstar artists… defining our own sense of culture and what’s relevant to ourselves. It’s not some kind of industry agenda pushed on everyone.

There are simply lesser and lesser people tuning into the old model. The new model is spreading everything out much much thinner, but you literally have a world of music at your fingertips, so in that regard, it’s pretty awesome.

I was on an airplane getting ready to depart JFK airport (still at the gate) when I got a text from a friend telling me that MJ had died. I have fond memories of his music, he was certainly one of a kind, and I feel sorry that he never had a chance to just be a kid.

Like many people, I was shocked. I was at home and watched the coverage on the news.

I remember comedy central and south park making fun of him on a daily basis. After he pasted away everyone and their mom was saying what a great man he was even the people that made fun of him. Comedy central and south pretended like nothing happened.

I was playing World of Warcraft when it came out. Half the people believed it and half thought it was a hoax. Knowing how people troll I just assumed it was a hoax.
