I tell you the bad things about hitchhiking, my cousin back in the day
was on some hard drugs, this guy pulls over to pick up my cousin
cause she was hitchhiking to go to another city to buy drugs she needed
she yelled at him you will take me where i want go, i never would follow
the path my cousin took in life cause her body hurts her from all the drugs
she did so she's ruined.. My advice to all people, be careful what choice
you make in life cause that hitchhiker could be your last draw back no
matter who the person is whose hitchhiking could be set up to hijack
ones car, they could be looking for money, they could kidnap you too
it's a gamble one takes in life when encountering these situations...

my cousin is okay she doesn't do hard drugs
now she takes xanax and methadone but she's heck
lot better than the life she was living on crack, cocaine
shooting up , she is going on age 57 and it's rough for
her cause she still feels the withdrawals of drugs she used
to be on but i think hitchhiking as many times as she did
i am thinking there may been some crimes committed
when she couldn't get her way but i am glad i never
went to the extent of what she did but life is challenging

I only pick women up and she has to have a kid with her. If she has a man with her then no. I remember this lady with a baby asked me for a ride and I said yes and she said her husband was in the store. I was like nah. I don't know... If I was an adult and if I had a car I'd probably stop for a kid an dash them if they are okay. I'd pick them up drove them to the nearest town get them something to eat and ask them how'd they end up there where's their parents and how to contact them if not I'd probably drop them off to the police.

Yeah, that's always a risk... Well that's just the thing I would only pick them up if I was the only person in the car so I wouldn't put anyone else's life at risk. Also that's why I went with the kid and the confused old people. I mean sure they could still dangerous but it's less likely the kids probably already scared and need help and the elderly person is probaly scared doesn't know where they are. When I say kid I litterally mean 5 from 12 teens are too much of a risk of probably get robbed, and old I don't mean just and adult like around their 50s or 60s that's still can manage or their own I mean an elderly person from 70s to 90s that struggles when walking and possibly has Alzheimer's. Not to mention I'm not planning on driving the, mot their destination I'm just taking them to sicilization so they can be taken care of somewhere else. And if they rob me or steal my car damn they were an amazing actor had me fooled and they deserve it.

I have picked up hitchhikers before regardless of what they look like. Ugly or beautiful, male or female, adult or child. The last hitchhiker I picked up was a middle aged man who looked a little frightening to be honest, but he actually turned out to be nice :)

I will add that I don't pick up a hitchhiker who looks possibly threatening if it's at nighttime and/or if there are not many other people/cars around. There is safety is daylight and numbers.

And I hide all my valuables and keep my phone by my side where I can reach it but the hitchhiker can't. I always talk to the hitchhiker for a few minutes before deciding whether or not to let them in my car. I have them sit in the front seat, next to me, where I can see what they're doing.

Criminal Minds and a protective Daddy have taught me not to pick up any hitchhikers at all. The only exception would be someone I know and am familiar with, as in only a friend. My friends don't hitchike so I guess I wouldn't be picking anyone up at all.

I almost always pick up hitch hikers if I see them and have a place to stop. I estimate that I've hitched around 15K miles myself. I've never had any problems either hitching or picking up hitch hikers. Well not more than minor inconveniences anyway.

People's fear of hitch hiking and picking them up is unfounded. I'd like to see the evidence that it's actually dangerous. The biggest danger with hitch hiking is the same danger that most people face every day - getting in a car wreck. Whether it's doing it yourself or picking them up, just use the same kind of common sense you'd use dealing with any other situation.

Well my impression is that hitching is still pretty common in Europe and many other places. In the US I rarely see hitchers any more. So it's something that younger people have no experience with, and no knowledge.

However it used to be VERY common in the US. It was an accepted form of transportation. During the 70s you could do a road trip and literally see hundreds of hitchers in a day - that's certainly above average, but it could easily happen. It was very common to see hitchers on most highway on-ramps. Sometimes there were a dozen or more at a single on-ramp. Hitchers were everywhere.

By the way, I even used to hitch with my girlfriend and never had a problem. I think I probably hitched around 3500 miles with her.

No, never had anything really bad happen. We got stopped and questioned by the cops a lot. I got propositioned by gays sometimes who just drop you off as soon as you turn them down. We'd get yelled at a lot by passing drivers who didn't like us.

Other than that it was the same kind of inconveniences that any hiker or outdoors type runs into. If it rains you get wet. If it gets dark and you're tired, you sleep where ever you can find (usually off in the trees near the highway). So if you want to travel in luxury then hitching isn't for you. If you want one hell of a good adventure then hitching is the way to go. It's about adventuring as much or more than simply getting from point A to point B.

My longest ride was 1700 miles (yes that was one ride). Second longest was 1200 miles. Longest wait getting a ride was 9 hours. I read quite a few chapters of The Hobbit while I waited. That's a good book to read while adventuring. :)

I don't pick up hitchhikers ever. I feel really bad sometimes though, like one time there was an old dude and a little kid, I slowed down for a second but kept going and I ended up crying because I felt so bad. I just have to convince myself that everyone is a psycho murderer and I'm good.

I've only ever seen a couple of hitchhikers since I've started driving, and they were just out in the country, like the middle of nowhere. I skipped over those people and likely would drive past every other hitchhiker. I mean, as a female, it seems too risky.

I have hitch-hiked before, and I have been in the car when my dad picked a hitch-hiker up. My dad doesn't care too much, he likes to give people a hand. If I'm driving I would rather not pick one up, for safety reasons. I have never hitch-hiked properly here in England, but I've done it in Germany, Switzerland and France. I was not alone though, alone I would probably never hitch-hike.

I have done it once and I was just in a good mood it was this really poor guy and he needed a ride home he was outside in the freezing snow and I was on my way back from school and I first drove by and then felt bad and drove back and picked him up he was very thankful and I drove him home. Picking up hitchhikers is always dangerous, but sadly people have certain advantages over others of being picked up cause of their age, size, and looks.

Actually, I'm pretty generous when it comes to hitchhikers, and do nearly always pick them up - partly because I'm a semi-believer in karma, and partly because I just really enjoy watching their expressions when I drive way fast on the very narrow and twisty roads we have around here.
