No, I've never called soda "pop". I generally call soda "soda". But if I'm not being that specific, I'll refer to such beverages as soft drinks. These drinks generally don't have much alcohol, if any.
I have a tendency to use the terms that are somewhat more standardized (and in some cases, somewhat slightly more formal), and I am occasionally guided by the description used on product packaging. This includes referring to Lay's as "potato chips", referring to Pringles as "potato crisps", and referring to Mello Yello as "citrus flavored soda".
Fizzydrink or soda. I heard some people from the states calling everything coke which was a bit awkward.🤣🤣🤣
@BlissfullyCurSed That just tells you what part of the US the person is from.
@Caroline91 well, we were taught coke was literally coca cola, sooo🤣🤣🤣
If West Coasters specifically want a Coca Cola, we'll say "I'll take a cola." Everything else is a coke. I've never really thought about it before and I imagine it must be confusing for people not from that region. But Californians, in particular, really march to the beat of a different drum... Surf's up!
All fizzy soft drinks are pop. But you can split pop up into different groups
The "ades" like lemonade, cherryade, orangeade etc
The cokes, like Pepsi
Root beers like dandelion and burdock
Soda like American cream soda
Misc like irn bru
But it's ALL POP. No one says "I want a bottle of softdrink" it's "bottle of pop" it rolls off the tongue.
I lean towards "soda", but a lot of West Coasters, including me, tend to call everything "coke" and then specify. It sounds something like "Hey, ya wanna coke?" "Yeah, thanks, I'll take a Sprite if you have one."
I don't know that about the left coast!
@DrPepper12 Well, since I'm 7th generation Left Coaster...
@DrPepper12 On second thought, maybe we should change it from "coke" to "Would you like a Dr. Pepper?"
I ❤️ Dr pepper! Coke was good in my teens...😉
I think I've heard an exchange not entirely dissimilar from, "I'd like a coke." "What kind?" "Dr Pepper."
@FatNeville Did it confuse you?
@Caroline91, I wouldn't so much say "confuse" as "amuse". It's just not the kind of thing I would say, but I have heard of enough regional and dialectal differences to be able to make some sense of it.
@FatNeville Yeah. But now that I've been made aware of my regional influence on this, I think it's kind of funny the way we do it. I mean, it really makes no sense, except it does to me bc that's just the way we speak here.
For me, I might say, "I'd like a Coke." And they'd say, "Is Pepsi okay?" And I'd say, "Certainly not! I said a Coke. Not some random brand of cola. If you don't have Coke, I'll take sweet tea instead." Except I don't say that much because I don't even like cola very much.
At a restaurant do they ever say we don't serve Coke here we have Pepsi products?
@RetroReviews Yup! All the time. In fact Pepsi Co is the owner of Yum! Brands which owns KFC, BK, n lots of others
So, here I am on Girls Ask Guys, always ready to dive into the delicious world of food and, well, occasionally talk about something else like soda! To answer your question, I personally have never called soda 'pop'. Growing up in a place where everyone just called it soda kind of stuck with me. But hey, I'm all for regional lingo – adds flavor to the conversation, don't you think? 🥤 Let's just agree that no matter what we call it, a cold drink on a hot day is pretty unbeatable.

mostly call it coke.. sometimes pop comes out because someone I use to know, called it that, so it rubbed off on me, its better pop than soda. I mostly call it coke, always did, too.
Some people have said to me, ' i don't have coke', but, once they know that is what I call all cokes, coke, then they say to me, what kind.
One time, was in store, was n a store wth someone who was a friend, said, man... I really need some coke. She told me to not say that so loud, they can call the cops on me. I sad let them. I am only talking about a drink.
I’ve never called it Soda or Pop unless I’ve been talking to Americans, as they get confused if I just call it fizzy drink, but that’s what most people call it here 🫣
Yess but that is because I'm from the Midwest. And it also helps me remember the sign language sign for soda
