Women are ridiculed or ostracized for not being in a relationship. We have that ever-ticking biological clock. We are ridiculed if we are unmarried after a certain age. It seems okay for men to be single but crazy for women to be. There seems to be a double standard here. It is crazy for women to be single and in their thirties, forties, or fifties, but it is perfectly fine and desirable for men to be single in the same age range.

Where women are called spinsters, men are called bachelors. It is actually good for men to be single, which is not the case for women. Take a look at celebrities. There are plenty of older men who are still just as famous as they were when they were young. George Clooney is single and in his forties and gets just as much work as the young men in Hollywood. Clooney was even named "Sexiest Man Alive" by People Magazine last year. I highly doubt you'll ever find Glen Close or Meryl Streep named "Sexiest Woman Alive". They are too old!

How fair is that? If there is a case where an older man wants to settle down, he tends to avoid women his own age because they are "desperate". Well, why do you think we are desperate? It could be because everything in society tells us it's wrong to be middle-aged and single.

Older women are told they are not sexy. They are too old to be sexy. The attractive women are younger and hipper and more desirable. This generalization makes women fear being old and single, so they get married as soon as they are able. Perhaps it is not women who are the desperate weird ones.

Maybe it is the men that have something wrong with them. You don't want to start a family? That's weird. You are fifty and dating a twenty year old? Eww, what is wrong with you? We are not weird, you are!

DeanW "This generalization makes women fear being old and single, so they get married as soon as they are able." Really good point.

fastboxster I do hope nobody is actually ridiculing or ostracizing. Every argument can be flipped. Why do men get so much pressure to be "successful" and be the breadwinner? We're forced to focus on our careers to the point where we might miss out on "dating". - More than a year ago
markluke Generalizations they are completely ineffective. the truth is that though your friends may be married they may be ill matched I submit that the vast majority of marriages are miserable failures to get over loneliness all you need to do is be around people - More than a year ago
mickjam Ignorant and double-standard. You are making generalizations from twenty years ago. The face of single life has changed. It's not such a stigma to be single anymore. If you are comfortable with who you are, it doesn't matter. I'm still single and happy. - More than a year ago
David-C I personally think it's great that women aren't getting married until later in their lives. Marraige is over rated, and it's much better and cheaper for both men and women to move on if it doesn't work out without lawyers and judges getting involved. - 11 months ago
inky123 I never date women my age and yes they are desperate, younger women are usually more fun, sexier and have less baggage, also men usually want what other men want, I rarely find women my age being persued by other men like my 10 year younger gf. - 11 months ago
motorboater Um...I get your point but seriously rework your arguments here. Clooney IS 12 years younger than Streep and 14 younger than Close. Compare him to starlets in their 40s like Hallie Berry and Julia Roberts and oops, not so much of a point there. - 9 months ago
OnoNw1 I have always thought a single male at 35 is something to stay away from. unless he has a really good reason such as he has been working on his ph.d or that his fiance or wife left him. but 35 year old who's not been in a committed relationship always sends off some red flag. - 4 months ago
